The gardens are Bath's most centrally situated pleasure
grounds. Overlooking the River Avon they give fine
views of Pulteney Bridge and the weir. The bedding
displays are amongst the finest in the country.
There are plenty of places to sit and enjoy the
scenery. The cafe is open during the main season
(May - Sept). |

Royal Crescent

Bath
John Wood the Younger's magnificent crescent was
completed in 1774 after seven years' construction.
It is made up of 30 grand houses, ornamented with
114 Ionic columns. The elegant sweep of lawn in
front of the crescent is separated from the park
below by a ha-ha, a cleverly constructed wall, invisible
from the street above, built to prevent sheep and
cows from straying onto the crescent.

Sydney Gardens

Steped in history, this is the oldest park in the
city, planned and laid out by architect Harcourt
Masters in 1795. Very popular in the 18th &
19th century, breakfasts promenades and concerts
were held here - visited by members of the Royal
Family and Jane Austen. The park contains fine trees,
shrubberies, lawns and flower beds, tennis courts
and a childrens play area.

houses a fine collection of Oriental treasures from
China, Japan and beyond. Displays include jade,

The Grand Pump Room, overlooking the spring is the
social heart of Bath. The elegant interior of 1795
is something every visitor to Bath should see. You
can enjoy a glass of spa water drawn from the fountain,
perhaps as an appetiser to a traditional Pump Room
tea. Musical accompaniment is provided by The Pump
Room Trio.

The 130 foot neo-classical Tower was built for wealthy
eccentric William Beckford in 1827 as a study retreat
which housed part of his art collection & library.
Today it contains a museum collection on the first
floor illustrating his life & interests. Visitors
can climb up the newly restored Tower into the Belvedere
for panoramic views over Bath & countryside.

and musician William Herschel and his sister Caroline
during last quarter of 18th C. Later occupied by
the sister of Fanny Burney the novelist. Visit the
astronomer's workshop where Herschel made his telescopes,

Vault astronomy auditorium. Georgian garden landscaped
in style of Herschel's day.

Baths surrounding the hot spring at the heart of

The museum shows, largely by way of period rooms, how Americans lived from the early New England Settlers to the eve of the Civil War. Other attractions include an 18th Century Massachusetts Tavern. There is also a wonderful collection of American quilts. There are extensive gardens and an arboretum of North American trees and shrubs. New for 2007 is the American Heritage Exhibition in the former basement. With touch screens, video clips and computer actives this lively kid friendly area introduces the visitor to why immigrants went to America. It also features the Wild West, the Native Americans, and the American Civil War. A fun and informative area.
The museum also has installed a lift for disabled visitors to reach all the floors.
The 2007 exhibition is Dollar Princesses: American Heiress to Peeress in late Victorian & Edwardian England. The story of American heiresses like Winston Churchill’s mother, Jenny Jerome and their journeys to England to marry into the English aristocracy. A beautiful exhibition to interest all visitors.
