Edinburgh’s magnificent castle is perched atop a dormant volcano that soars above the city below. Edinburgh's top tourist attraction, it is instantly recognised throughout the world. The Castle rock has been inhabited since 800 BC and the great Castle has become a symbol of Scotland's national pride. Visit the Honours of the Kingdom exhibition that displays the Scottish Crown Jewels, The Stone of Destiny and Mons Meg cannon. The famous One O’Clock gun, once used to keep time at nearby Leith Harbour, is still fired with military precision from the Castle every day. It is said that residents of Edinburgh are easily recognised as the gun is fired; while tourists jump back or look around in alarm, the city’s folk merely check that their watch is keeping the correct time.
Guided tours are available, although they cannot be reserved in advance

Standing majestically at the end of the Royal Mile, the Palace of Holyroodhouse is the official Scottish residence of Her Majesty The Queen and is an integral part of Scotland’s fascinating history. Founded as a monastery in 1128, the Palace is most well known as the home of Mary Queen of Scots, who was twice married in the Abbey at Holyroodhouse and who witnessed the murder of her secretary by her jealous husband, Lord Darnley in her private apartments. Subsequent Kings and Queens have made Holyroodhouse their official residence in Scotland, and during the Jacobite Uprising of 1745, the Palace served as the headquarters of Bonnie Prince Charlie. Today, the Palace is used by The Queen and by the Royal Family for state ceremonies and official entertaining, and is open to the public.

A macabre visitor attraction buried deep beneath the paving stones of Edinburgh, the world famous Edinburgh Dungeon depicts the darkest chapters of Scottish history in grisly detail. The Dungeon has a wonderfully interactive emphasis, with actors, rides and tableaux combining horror and humour to tell their tales of terror and torture, mutilation and mass murder, persecution and pestilence. Please note: The Edinburgh Dungeon may not be suitable for very young children, or for those of a nervous (or squeamish) disposition.

Craigmillar Castle is situated just three miles from Edinburgh city centre and is one of Scotland’s most completely preserved Medieval castles. The castle started life in around 1400, and the characteristic curtain wall was added 40 years later. The English captured the castle in 1544 but the castle is perhaps best known for the stays of Mary, Queen of Scots in 1563 and 1566. During her second stay, it is thought that conspirators agreed the Craigmillar Bond, the plot to kill Mary's dissolute husband Lord Darnley. The castle commands panoramic views of Edinburgh.
