Bedford is a pleasant riverside town close to unspoilt countryside, which at the same time remains within easy access of London, Oxford and Cambridge. It offers a number of places to see, and an assortment of activities to take part in, incorporating history, leisure, the arts and culture. Bedford is the county town of Bedfordshire. Bedford and the nearby Kempston combine to make up the urban area of Bedford Borough. However, Bedford is not the largest town in the county of Bedfordshire: that accolade goes to Luton, at the bottom of Bedfordshire. One of the best things about Bedford today, is the cultural diversity, which makes itself apparent on entering the town. It can be an enjoyable experience for any visitor, and the town tailors to a variety of different tastes. The town centre offers shopping, a wide range of housing and educational facilities, and numerous recreational amenities. Furthermore, surrounding this urban district are a number of charming villages in pleasant rural setting.

There is an array of historically noteworthy characters in the Bedford timeline, including John Bunyan, who helped to shape the disposition of Bedford. A 17th century writer and preacher, and author of The Pilgrim’s progress, John Bunyan is a prominent historical figure. Other famous citizens of Bedford include 15th century Mayor of London, Sir William Harpur; John Howard, the 18th century prison reformer; and Archbishop Trevor Huddleston, who campaigned against apartheid and is memorialized in Bedford town centre.

One of the superb natural features of Bedford town is the River Great Ouse, one of the cornerstones of the town centre. The river is prominent and is a much-appreciated feature of Bedford, as showcased by the Bedford River Festival, which is held on the riverbanks every two years and is a big visitor attraction. Another landmark feature of Bedford town centre is St Paul’s Church. This historically significant religious building dates back to around the 13th century. It is an architecturally significant structure as well as remaining a functioning place of worship. As a whole, Bedford is a modern and culturally welcoming town, grown out of a longstanding heritage.
