The Dashwood Mausoleum on nearby West Wycombe Hill

High Wycombe is a large town in Buckinghamshire. It is actually one of the largest towns in the county, whose popularity in part derives from its location less than 30 miles outside of Central London. Over time High Wycombe has become a sprawling town, with a ‘new town’ style centre surrounded by overlapping outlying suburbs.
High Wycombe is older than the town centre may suggest. It predates the Domesday Book and was in fact a market town as far back as the Middle Ages. It fulfilled several roles throughout history. It was a coaching stop, and a paper mill town, and a centre for the furniture industry. High Wycombe also has a local RAF presence.
High Wycombe is located just off the M40 motorway, which heads down into London or up past Oxford into the Midlands. High Wycombe has a fairly central location, making it a good base for enjoying Buckinghamshire or perhaps heading into Berkshire and Oxfordshire. Significant towns within close reach include Reading, Slough, Windsor, Oxford, Watford, St Albans and Hemel Hempstead. The heart of London is also easily accessible and filled with historical sights, cultural theatre shows and a vibrant nightlife. At the same time, that doesn’t mean that High Wycombe itself is not worth exploring. The town has a pedestrianised centre, and a large High Street shopping centre.
There are also numerous local attractions to enjoy in and around High Wycombe. The sharply defined chalk-based shadow of the Chiltern Hills is an immensely popular sight, winding from Oxfordshire and across Buckinghamshire. Alternatively, Hughenden Manor is a great heritage site. It is a Victorian National Trust property, known as the home of Benjamin Disraeli, the 19th century British Prime Minister. Visitors to High Wycombe are also only a short jaunt down the motorway from Thorpe Park, the incredibly popular theme park, which has thrill rides to accommodate for the whole family.
