Huntingdon was the birthplace of Oliver Cromwell in 1599, and this museum in his home town tells the story of the man, his history and his legacy, through portraits, documents and artefacts pertaining to Cromwell and his family. The museum opened in 1962, in an old grammar school where Cromwell had been a pupil more than 350 years previously, and gives a fascinating insight into his life.

Ely Cathedral - the Cathedral Church of the Holy and Undivided Trinity of Ely – is one of the UK’s most celebrated examples of Norman architecture, and towers above the tiny city of Ely in Cambridgeshire. A place of worship has stood on the site since the seventh century, but the present structure was built between the 1080s and the early 15th century.

Foster’s Windmill was built in 1857, although it is believed that a windmill has stood on the site since the 11th century. The current windmill is a beautifully restored and working example, and is still used to grind corn to this day. Foster’s Mill makes an interesting day out, and gives an insight into a bygone age.

Hemingford Grey Manor, near Huntingdon in Cambridgeshire, is a remarkably well-preserved example of a Norman house. The oldest parts date back to the early 1130s and, despite a large number of additions and alterations over the years, it is one of the oldest houses to be continuously occupied in the UK. The gardens are open daily, but guided tours of the house must be booked in advance.

Houghton Mill is the only remaining water mill still in operation on the River Great Ouse in Cambridgeshire. Dating from the 18th century, it is now under the careful ownership of the National Trust, and offers a hands-on approach to bringing the unique history of the building and the surrounding area to life.

A group of enthusiasts re-opened a stretch of historic railway line, between Peterborough and Yarwell, in 1977 – the Nene Valley Railway was born again. Today it is one of the region’s main tourist attractions, and provides a fun day out for the whole family. Classic steam engines (both British and continental) haul the beautifully restored carriages through the low-lying countryside, and children will love meeting the famous Thomas the Tank Engine.

A place of worship has existed on the site of Peterborough Cathedral since the seventh century AD, but the original abbey was destroyed by the Vikings. There are few remains of its Saxon replacement either, as the Normans constructed the current building on the site in 1118. It is one of the UK’s finest examples of Norman architecture, and it towers over the city of Peterborough below.

Wimpole Hall is the largest and grandest Georgian manor house in Cambridgeshire, and can be found in 20 acres of magnificent grounds in Arrington. The splendid 18th-century house has a beautifully ornate interior, and the Capability Brown designed grounds have a variety of paths and walks to explore, as well as follies and a lake.
