At the Flag Fen Archaeology Park visitors can explore something of the history in the region, most notably that of the Celtic people who resided in the area some 3,500 years ago. Covering 20 acres, the Fen has a number of outdoor display spaces, with Bronze Age features and landscapes waiting to be explored. Initial discoveries were made in 1982 before it was turned into the centre we see today, with its reconstructed historic features, its Roman herb gardens and its range of activities.

A group of enthusiasts re-opened a stretch of historic railway line, between Peterborough and Yarwell, in 1977 – the Nene Valley Railway was born again. Today it is one of the region’s main tourist attractions, and provides a fun day out for the whole family. Classic steam engines (both British and continental) haul the beautifully restored carriages through the low-lying countryside, and children will love meeting the famous Thomas the Tank Engine.

A place of worship has existed on the site of Peterborough Cathedral since the seventh century AD, but the original abbey was destroyed by the Vikings. There are few remains of its Saxon replacement either, as the Normans constructed the current building on the site in 1118. It is one of the UK’s finest examples of Norman architecture, and it towers over the city of Peterborough below.
