Chatsworth House and its extensive estate is one of the UK’s most iconic stately homes, situated in the beautiful rolling Derbyshire countryside. The home of the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire, it has been used for countless period television dramas and films. It enjoys enormous popularity because of this, but also because of its superbly preserved atmosphere and charm.

Ashbourne makes a great base for exploring the attractive Derbyshire countryside. Hiking and biking are always popular. There are also plenty of opportunities to partake in a little fishing. Izaak Walton justifiably referenced the rivers around Ashbourne in his seminal fishing guide, The Compleat Angler. Golf fans will find several golf clubs to choose from within driving distance. Uttoxeter Racecourse will also appeal to hose looking for a day at the horses.

Ashbourne sits on the southern edge of the Peak District, and is known as the ‘Gateway to Dovedale’, a National Trust site and walking area. Near this, outside the village of Thorpe, sits Thorpe Cloud. This is a walkable hill, which rewards you with attractive views from the top. However, this is only a little bit of the hundreds of miles of countryside that make up the Peak District.

Strutt’s North Mill is a fine example of the industrial power that built the fortunes of Derbyshire. It is an early 19th century cotton mill, powered by water. There is an educational visitor centre on site, and guided tours of this historic building are available. The site also includes the nearby River Gardens, which are a pretty counterpoint to the mill.

Sudbury Hall is an estate dating back to the 1600s. Formerly the country seat of the Vernon line, today it is a National Trust property offering something for the whole family. Visitors can either explore the history of the Hall with a tour, or head to the Museum of Childhood, which compare the lives and games of Victorian children to those of the present day.
