Buxton Museum is a small but pleasant introduction to the natural history of the area. Its exhibits are largely based on the fossil record and geological specimens. There is also an art gallery on site, displaying a collection of pieces from the last two centuries. Admission to the museum is free. It is open between Tuesdays and Saturdays, as well as Sundays and Bank Holidays during the summer.

Buxton Opera House first opened in 1903 and enjoyed great success as a playhouse for many years. It was later used as a cinema before closing in the 1970s. Happily, this closure was short-lived. It reopened in 1979 and has been extensively and sympathetically restored. It now produces a huge calendar of events, including performances for the annual Buxton Festival.

Ashbourne sits on the southern edge of the Peak District, and is known as the ‘Gateway to Dovedale’, a National Trust site and walking area. Near this, outside the village of Thorpe, sits Thorpe Cloud. This is a walkable hill, which rewards you with attractive views from the top. However, this is only a little bit of the hundreds of miles of countryside that make up the Peak District.

Poole’s Cavern is a striking natural limestone cave within the Peak District. It has been a visitor attraction for several hundred years, and significant archaeological remains have been found within. The showcave is open to the public, with tours available through several distinct chambers, including The Poached Egg and the Frozen Waterfall areas, named for the mineralised formations found within.
