Gustav Holst is the mastermind behind ‘The Planets’ and was born in Cheltenham in 1874. The Regency terrace house in which he was born is now a tribute to the great man and his music, with an impressive assortment of his personal belongings. The house also provides a thought-provoking glimpse of life in Cheltenham in the Victorian era, the house having been completed with period perfection.

Cheltenham’s prestigious Imperial gardens were formerly envisioned to be used exclusively for patrons of Sherborne Spa, which stood on the site now occupied by the Queen’s Hotel. The present arrangement of the gardens is a result of major replanting in the years following the Second World War. A large collection of over 25,000 bedding plants are relished by thousands of visitors every year, whilst during the summer months outdoor events such as the Cheltenham Literature Festival and Bands in the Park are held in this delightful setting.

The Pitville Pump Room was constructed throughout the mid to late 1820s as the majestic centerpiece of prosperous politician and entrepreneur Joseph Pitt’s Cheltenham estate. It was the biggest of the numerous pump houses in the town from which the prominent spa waters could be taken, and the sulphur and iron rich waters can still be drank today by visitors, although a resilient constitution may be necessary! Pittville Pump Room possesses a stirring museum and hosts a programme of proceedings throughout the year. It may also be hired for an array cultural, commercial and community events.

Cheltenham Racecourse houses the National Hunt racing in the UK.
