Altrincham Town Hall

The affluent market town of Altrincham is set on the south-western side of Manchester, around eight miles from the centre of this giant of the north. The transport networks in this part of the country are particularly extensive, with Manchester Airport just six miles away, a train station in the town centre and plenty of motorways – the M6, M56, M60 and M62 – all nearby. The town, and indeed the airport, are set on the southern fringes of Greater Manchester, near the border with Cheshire.
Altrincham was once a part of Cheshire and has had a market since the 1290 when it was first established, a feature that remains to this day. By 1765 the Bridgewater Canal had been extended to the town while in 1849 the railway had arrived which had a helpful industrial impact on the setting. The historic Dunham Massey Hall is set in the town and, in days gone by, was home to the Earl of Stamford; today is it a grade I listed National Trust property. The town of Altrincham is home to a number of parks such as the John Leigh Park, Stamford Park and Grove Park while there is also the Dunham Forest Golf and Country Club which is found on the western edge.
The nearby Manchester Airport, meanwhile, has become something of a global gateway since its inception in the 1920s. Today, some 100 airlines use the airport and they ferry 22 million passengers and cargo to 210 destinations around the world annually. Long ago in 1928 Barton in West Manchester was designated as the site for an airport in the city and this was completed two years later. It was soon realised, however, that the setting was unsuitable for larger aircraft and its land was expensive so in 1934 space to the south of Manchester was earmarked as an alternative. And so, in 1938, Ringway Airport opened and it was soon put to work during the Second World War as a regional hub. An array of extensions and developments have taken place over the years and they have affected runway length, terminal numbers and sizes, and the like. The most recent major overhaul came in 2001 when a second runway was opened, paving the way for further expansion and growth.
