Click for travel directions The Montagu Arms Hotel Hampshire is an atmospheric and characterful hotel set in the beautiful surroundings of Beaulieu in the New Forest. Tucked away in tranquil seclusion, yet so easy to get to, The Montagu Arms is ideal for a relaxing break to get away from the stresses of modern living and to experience the pleasures of life. This four-star Hampshire hotel has in its eventful 200 year history established itself as a luxurious, charming country retreat with a firm emphasis on customer care and satisfaction, and is the ideal base from which to explore the enchanting and beautiful New Forest.

The sense of history is tangible throughout the New Forest. William the Conqueror requisitioned the area in 1079 for use as a deer hunting forest for the King. Ancient traditions still live on here and the ponies and donkeys roaming the New Forest are a charming and familiar sight. Many of the ships in Lord Admiral Nelson’s fleet were built from New Forest timber; HMS Illustrious and Agamemnon were built not far from Beaulieu, in the shipyards at Bucklers Hard.

Of course, The Montagu Arms Hotel Hampshire also has its own fascinating story to tell, having been a prominent feature of the picturesque village of Beaulieu for over 200 years. There has been an inn on the site of The Montagu Arms since the 16th century, named successively The Ship, then The George. It took on its current title in 1742. The inn became a meeting place for local farmers and parish officers, and was used for timber auctions and lectures. An annual cattle market was held on the site until 1809, and the inn even had its own farmland. The annual Beaulieu fairs originating from 1607 were held here, as well as weekly markets.

Today’s Montagu Arms dates mostly from the late 1880s when the inn’s original façade was replaced with the current brick and timber structure. Another wing was added to the building in 1925, completing the appearance of the hotel as it looks today. Many of the original features and all of the original charm are preserved, and a sense of timelessness and quintessential English charm pervades every room, nook and cranny.
