Chartwell was the residence of Sir Winston Churchill from 1922 until his death in 1965. Churchill loved Chartwell, and the Kent mansion is today a popular tourist attraction. The Dickens House Museum in Broadstairs, Kent was originally owned by one Mary Pearson Strong – upon whom Charles Dickens based the character of Miss Betsey Trotwood in his book David Copperfield. During the summer of 1940, the Battle of Britain between the Luftwaffe and the RAF raged in the skies above Kent and Southern England. The Kent Battle of Britain Museum is dedicated to this key event of the Second World War, and is home to the UK’s most important collection of artefacts pertaining to the era. This includes everything from medals, documents and prints to Spitfires, Hurricanes, Messerschmitts, vehicles and weapons. The museum is open during the summer season.
