Dover Castle was first constructed in the 12th century, on the bones of previous Norman, Roman and Iron Age fortifications. As a visitor attraction, the castle has been furnished to reflect how it would have looked on completion. In addition to exploring the castle, visitors can also take a tour into the Secret Wartime Tunnels carved deep into the cliffs, which were essential during World War II as barracks, hospitals and military headquarters.

Dover Museum makes a great first stop in which to learn about this historically important Kent town. The museum contains a broad selection of archaeological exhibits, including the famous Bronze Age boat. Another area uses displays and reconstructions describing the town’s inhabitants over the last thousand years. There is also a section devoted to temporary exhibitions.

Dover Transport Museum celebrates transportation through the ages, with a collection encompassing almost everything with wheels and/or an engine. Many of the vehicles on display are held in period styled garages and streets, making you feel like you’ve gone back in time. The museum also contains a tearoom and a gift shop on site.

The White Cliffs of Dover are internationally renowned as the ‘Gateway to Britain’. There are numerous trails and hikes to be enjoyed, taking in views of the active shipping lanes and the beautiful Kent coast. The White Cliffs Visitor Centre is a good place to start. It holds information leaflets about the cliffs, as well as a coffee area, gift shop, bathroom facilities and activity packs for younger visitors.
