The five-star Athenaeum Hotel is set on Piccadilly in the upmarket Mayfair part of London and it offers some of the most luxurious accommodation in the city. The family-owned property is small but has all the facilities you’d expect of a top quality five-star establishment and there are even a handful of apartments linked to the hotel nearby. Though Green Park is set on the other side of the road The Athenaeum has its own garden which is, quite uniquely, found on one of the hotel’s walls.
When built in the middle of the 19th century Hope House, as it was known then, was Victorian in design and had an ‘extravagant interior’ according to Charles Dickens. In 1864 it became the Junior Athenaeum Club to entertain MPs and Lords and this was the first time the term Athenaeum was used in conjunction with the property. By the 1930s it had been transformed into an apartment block with Art Deco design and during the 1970s it was turned into a hotel that has since welcomed many high profile names.
The Athenaeum is found in the southern part of Mayfair on Piccadilly and is across the road from Green Park. Hyde Park is also nearby and is particularly large while all sorts of other London attractions are within easy reach thanks to its good location. Among the famous places nearby are the likes of Piccadilly Circus, Buckingham Palace and Trafalgar Square. As is often the case the hotel is well placed for access to the London underground with the Hyde Park Corner and Green Park stations a short walk away.
