The historic Banqueting House can be found at the heart of Whitehall, although it still remains one of London’s hidden treasures. It was designed by Inigo Jones for King James I, was completed in 1622, and was originally intended for occasions of state, plays and masques. Today, visitors can uncover the fascinating history of the building during the day, as well as enjoying the unique programme of events held in the evening.

Since 1837, the year Queen Victoria came to the throne, Buckingham Palace has been the official royal residence of the monarch. As you’d expect the setting is ornate with much tradition and luxury found throughout. Between the four sides of the palace there is a quadrangle while to the rear there is a large garden and lake. Each year the monarch entertains somewhere in the region of 50,000 people for various events including for garden parties throughout July.

Part of the Imperial War Museum, the Cabinet War Rooms house an underground complex that was used during the Second World War by the British government as a control centre. The Churchill Museum meanwhile documents the life of the great British war-time leader. The museum is often called the Churchill War Rooms and they were opened in 1984 as a museum for public visitation.

The Guards Museum is found on Birdcage Walk in Westminster near both St James’ and Green Park. It is home to exhibits surrounding the lives of foot guards from the Welsh, Irish, Scottish, Grenadier and Coldstream regiments. They exist to protect the monarch and the royal palaces and the museum opened in 1988, with exhibits dating back to the 17th century up to the present day.

Set in London’s historic Trafalgar Square, the National Gallery is home to one of the world's finest collections of Western European paintings. Permanent exhibitions include the Leonardo Cartoon by da Vinci and the Hay Wain by Constable, to name just a couple of the breathtaking works on display. Also known as the Houses of Parliament this is the place of the British legislature, with the House of Commons and the House of Lords found inside. History and tradition is wrapped up with every part of the palace, and, set next to the River Thames, it is among the city’s most impressive features, what with the renowned Big Ben clock tower and St Margaret’s Church also found inside its gates. Now a UN heritage site this part of London has been home to the seat of the UK government for something like 1,000 years.

The Tate Britain is home to a world-renowned national collection of British Art. The classical-style building opened more than 100 years ago and contains sculptures, drawings, oils and watercolours as well as important works by Turner and William Blake. It is known as Britain’s home of art, with pieces dating back from 1500 up until the current period.

Westminster Abbey is one of the UK’s most famous landmarks and one of its most popular tourist attractions. Consecrated in 1065, Westminster Abbey has been the venue for the coronations of all English sovereigns ever since. It is also the final resting place for countless English monarchs, as well as the great and the famous. Poet’s Corner is a particular highlight and commemorates many of the country’s most distinguished writers.

Set in the north-western corner of Westminster, near to Victoria train station and the Apollo Theatre, Westminster Cathedral is the overarching Catholic church of England and Wales. It is the largest church from the denomination in the country and is the seat of the Archbishop of Westminster. Built at the beginning of the 20th century the building is ornate as you’d expect and also has a tall tower attached.
