Castle Howard, the home of the Howard family for more than 300 years, is one of England’s most beautiful historic houses. The 18th century palace was designed by Sir John Vanbrugh and is situated between the North York Moors and the historic city of York. The magnificent house is set between two lakes and stands in a 10,000-acre estate; visitors to Castle Howard may wander freely through the house although guided tours are available. There is also a continuous programme of lectures, publications and research in the archives that bring the history of the house, the Howard family, the collections and the grounds to life. There are also attractions in the grounds of Castle Howard to keep the family amused: beautiful gardens and parks, gift shops, cafes, restaurants and a children’s play area.

The Cleveland Way is one of the UK’s 12 National Trails. It starts in the attractive town of Helmsley and runs for 110 miles, skirting the North York Moors National Park and finally ending up in the seaside town of Filey. En route, walkers will pass through dramatic scenery, from stunning heather clad moorland to Yorkshire’s outstanding coastline.

Dalby Forest can be found towards the east of the North York Moors National Park. It includes a nine-mile long drive through beautiful woodland, crossing hilltops, winding through valleys, passing lakes and crossing streams. There are also plenty of opportunities to get out of the car and explore the forest, with a myriad of paths and trails to enjoy on foot or bike, and the Dalby Forest Visitor Centre provides useful information.

Eden Camp can be found between the North York Moors National Park and the historic city of York. The Moors Centre can be found on the banks of the River Esk in the pretty village of Danby. It is an award-winning National Park Visitor Centre and is set in 13 acres of attractive grounds. Mount Grace Priory was a Carthusian monastery built in the late 14th century. Carthusian monks lived here in hermit-like isolation for centuries, but the priory today stands as a ruin, the Cleveland Hills providing a dramatic backdrop. Fascinating reconstructions bring the priory’s medieval past to life, and there is also a programme of art exhibitions showcasing the works of local artists.

The North York Moors takes up a massive expanse of North Yorkshire, spanning from the east coast across to near Northallerton and Thirsk, and from Middlesbrough in the north down to Pickering and Scarborough in the south. Here you will find vast moorland, a beautiful coastline and plenty of history, with many attractive villages in between. There are abbeys and priories, castles and visitor centres dotted around this 554 square mile national park. It was designated as such in 1952 and has a highest point of some 454 metres, namely Urra Moor. The cliffs and beaches of the east are a sight to behold too, particularly the Cleveland Hills and the cliff at Boulby. As well as sightseeing, visitors to this land can enjoy walking, cycling and riding for example.

The North Yorkshire Moors Railway runs between Pickering and Grosmont, through 18 miles of stunning wooded valleys and heather moorland scenery. The beautifully preserved steam railway passes through the heart of the North York Moors National Park, calling in at picture postcard villages along the way and offering walkers and cyclists access to unspoilt countryside. The North Yorkshire Moors Railway has, since 1974, been owned and run by the North Yorkshire Historical Railway Trust as a living museum. A programme of special events runs throughout the year, making this a great family day out.

The fabulous Rievaulx Abbey was founded by St Bernard of Clairvaux as the first Cistercian outpost in the North of England and was built during the 13th century. It served as a centre for White Monks to reform and colonise the North of England and Scotland, as part of the missionary effort to reform Christianity in Western Europe. Sadly Rievaulx Abbey was ruined during Henry VIII’s infamous Dissolution of the Monasteries, but the ruined abbey cuts a romantic figure and is popular with tourists.

Established as a national park in 1954, parts of the expansive Yorkshire Dales spill over into the county of North Yorkshire. Crossing the Pennines in the centre of England, the 680-square-miles of Dales are set in Cumbria as well as North Yorkshire, presenting an array of beauty, fabulous sights and rich history. Undoubtedly the most famous Dale is Wensleydale, after which the cheese is named of course, while other lesser known Dales include Birkdale, Coverdale, Airedale and Bishopdale. The Yorkshire Dales comprise river valleys, caves, hills, many animals and birds, waterfalls and meadows among other things. There are also beautiful villages with historic buildings interspersed as well as visitor centres to help explorers get to grips with their surroundings. The Dales Countryside Museum offers further insight into the life and history of the Dales.
