The Promenade Room which now houses Harrogate's Mercer Art Gallery has a long history. Completed in 1806, it stands as Harrogate's oldest spa building. It was first constructed as a promenade room to accommodate the large numbers of visitors coming to Harrogate to take the waters from the sulphur wells now housed in the Royal Pump Room. The Gallery building has experienced a number of transformations, including life as a theatre where some great Victorian personalities performed including Oscar Wilde and Lily Langtry.
