North York Moors
North Yorkshire
United Kingdom
The North York Moors takes up a massive expanse of North Yorkshire, spanning from the east coast across to near Northallerton and Thirsk, and from Middlesbrough in the north down to Pickering and Scarborough in the south. Here you will find vast moorland, a beautiful coastline and plenty of history, with many attractive villages in between. There are abbeys and priories, castles and visitor centres dotted around this 554 square mile national park. It was designated as such in 1952 and has a highest point of some 454 metres, namely Urra Moor. The cliffs and beaches of the east are a sight to behold too, particularly the Cleveland Hills and the cliff at Boulby. As well as sightseeing, visitors to this land can enjoy walking, cycling and riding for example.

A stone castle has stood on the site since the early 12th century when it became apparent that this important headland between Scarborough’s North and South Bays must be fortified. The current castle dates originally from the early 13th century but was much modified over the following centuries. Scarborough Castle was besieged on many occasions, the last major siege being during the English Civil War in 1645 when the Parliamentary attack largely destroyed the castle. The site continued to be used as a barracks, and suffered a heavy naval barrage during the attack on Scarborough in the First World War. Today Scarborough Castle is a fascinating visitor attraction, offering spectacular views over the town and along the coast.

The pretty St Mary’s Church in Scarborough is situated in the shadow of the castle. Dating from the 12th century, it is perhaps best known as the final resting place of Anne Bronte, the only Bronte Sister not to be buried at Haworth. Anne Bronte died in 1849 while visiting Scarborough and her grave can be found in the churchyard. The church itself boasts a rich history; the massive siege gun that destroyed the castle was fired from St Mary’s grounds in 1645. Today St Mary’s is a familiar Scarborough landmark and is a fascinating place to visit.
