Castle Howard, the home of the Howard family for more than 300 years, is one of England’s most beautiful historic houses. The 18th century palace was designed by Sir John Vanbrugh and is situated between the North York Moors and the historic city of York. The magnificent house is set between two lakes and stands in a 10,000-acre estate; visitors to Castle Howard may wander freely through the house although guided tours are available. There is also a continuous programme of lectures, publications and research in the archives that bring the history of the house, the Howard family, the collections and the grounds to life. There are also attractions in the grounds of Castle Howard to keep the family amused: beautiful gardens and parks, gift shops, cafes, restaurants and a children’s play area.
