The Banbury Cross is positioned in the centre of Banbury and was erected in 1859 in honour of the marriage of Queen Victoria’s daughter to Friedrich Wilhelm of Prussia. The 52-foot structure was the first in the town since the former crosses were destroyed in 1600. It is this cross that is referred to in the nursery rhyme Ride a Cock Horse to Banbury Cross, a rhyme that has made the town famous.

The Banbury Museum is home to a number of historic displays that are designed to educate the people of Banbury, and indeed visitors, about the town and its past. It is found next to the intriguingly named Spiceball Park and has exhibits accounting for the town’s role in the Civil War and its time as a market town, while there is also a 17th century costume inside.
