Henley Royal Regatta

It is primarily the Henley Royal Regatta that puts the town of Henley-on-Thames on the map, and it first contributed in such a way in 1839. Only during the Great Wars did the regatta not take place, and it has occurred annually aside from this. The regatta takes place over five days in July and has extended since its initial times of a one-day event. In fact, it is such a popular activity that qualifying has to take place in the lead up to the regatta to whittle the numbers down to a manageable figure, especially as only two boats can race at a time. Races begin at Temple Island, a mile from the town centre, and make their way into Henley from there to their finishing point.
