Mercure’s three-star Eastgate Hotel is part of the heritage of Oxford. Originally a 17th century coaching inn, the hotel is named for its position on the site of the east gate in the original city walls. It is believed that underneath the original building runs a tunnel connecting the hotel with Magdalen College, just one of a network of ancient tunnels running under the city. Formerly known as the Macdonald Eastgate Townhouse, the hotel has been renovated in recent years while keeping with Oxford’s mellow architecture. Many University of Oxford colleges are nearby, and the University’s Examination Building is the next building along High Street.

The Eastgate Hotel Oxford is a small and quiet venue. It has a modern outlook but is better known for its city centre position than its vibrant atmosphere. The hotel is centrally located just off Oxford High Street (‘The High’ in Oxford parlance) making it an ideal base from which to explore this historic city. This three-star hotel is close to Oxford University buildings, the Ruskin School of Fine Art, the Oxford University Examination Building, and the sights and shopping of the city centre. The hotel is also well located for major road links and Oxford Rail Station, making access to the Eastgate Hotel easy and convenient.

Oxford’s Eastgate Hotel has been expanded slightly in recent years, and the historic main building is supported by a newer rear extension. However this does not detract from the charm of the venue. Similarly, the hotel has been extensively refurbished but retains its character in the sympathetic design influences and individual sizes and shapes of different rooms. There are now 63 en-suite bedrooms offering all of the comforts you would expect, including satellite television, iron and ironing board, Internet access and tea/coffee making facilities. Single, twin or double options are available.

Furthermore the venue’s original dining facilities have been upgraded to incorporate the refined High Table Brasserie and Bar. The contemporary dining facilities have a distinct literary influence in line with the hotel’s university surroundings. The Eastgate hotel Oxford does not have any leisure facilities, but with a central location near the many attractions of this historic and cultural city this is not a particular drawback. In compensation, the hotel does offer onsite parking on a first come first served basis – a welcome feature in any city centre hotel, but particularly useful in Oxford, which has very limited car parking.
