Taunton is the county town of Somerset and the largest town in the county. Taunton is a historic district. There is Roman heritage in the surrounding area, while Taunton itself was an important Saxon town, which by the 11th century had become big enough to be classified as a borough. Taunton thrived as a market town, and it is still one of the biggest shopping venues in Somerset, aided by the convenient major road links running past the town. The turn of the new millennium has also seen Taunton revitalised thanks to an extensive regeneration project.

Despite the modern changes being made on the town centre, the heart of Taunton still retains pockets of historic architecture. Taunton Castle is probably the most famous. The first fortification built on the site was a Saxon structure that was later demolished to prevent invasion. The existing castle is Norman in origin, built over a priory. Today, Taunton Castle is home to the Museum of Somerset and the renowned Castle Hotel. Another of the town’s most distinctive landmarks is the lofty tower of the Church of St. Mary Magdalene. Its design showcases elements from the 12th century, when it was first built, and the Tudor period, which is when its tower was added. The tower, however, was actually sympathetically rebuilt in the 1800s.

Taunton is a historic town, and visitors can follow the heritage trail around the town centre to learn more about its past. Taunton is also a sporting destination, being home to horseracing at Taunton Racecourse and cricket within the famous Somerset County Cricket Ground. If you want to get out and explore Somerset, Taunton’s road links mean that much of southern England is within easy reach. By using the M5 motorway, you can head south to the beautiful city of Exeter and the south Devon coast. Alternatively you can follow the motorway north to the vibrant city of Bristol. Bath, the most well known city in Somerset is within driving distance, or you can escape from it all by heading west into the rural expanse of Exmoor National Park.
