It was built in the 1860s, in a similar style to the famous Osborne House on the Isle of Wight, and has survived the years without significant change. Roche Abbey was first founded in 1147, but it was not until 25 years later that the grand Gothic architecture began to emerge; by the end of the 12th century, Roche Abbey was one of the finest in the country. Several additions were made over the following centuries, but Henry VIII’s dissolution of the monasteries spelled the end for Roche Abbey. It is now a rather forlorn ruin, but the splendour of the original building can clearly be seen.
