There are five striking glens located in the northern part of the Angus region which are ideal for walkers and those looking to enjoy the scenery in the area. The Cairngorms National Park spills over into the northern parts of Angus and some of the glens are therefore part of this stunning place. The glens are: Isla, Prosen, Clova, Lethnot and Esk and are home to bounteous wildlife and nature, with hares, deer, bats, woodpeckers, grouse, osprey and eagles among the things you might see.

The sandstone abbey at Arbroath comes against a backdrop of vast history, having been constructed in 1178 for the monks of the Tironensian order. As well as the abbey there is also an abbot’s house which is one of the most complete structures of its kind in the country. The abbey famously played a role in bringing together the Declaration of Arbroath which called for Scottish independence in 1320.

Brechin’s Caledonian Railway provides an excellent opportunity for family visits thanks to its variety of things to see and do. The Victorian train station takes you back in time, as does a trip on one of the trains if you decide to journey to the Bridge of Dun along the Strathmore train line. There is also a museum to explain about the railway’s past as well as a buffet car and a gift shop.

The striking Glamis Castle is set amid acres of grounds and has been the ancestral home for the Earls of Strathmore for more than 600 years. The picturesque monument was once home to the Queen Mother and her second daughter Princess Margaret. Visitors can tour the castle and the gardens throughout the year, while various events are also held at the venue from time to time.
