The village of Bannockburn is located just to the south of Stirling and is the site of the famous Battle of Bannockburn which occurred in the area in 1314. Robert the Bruce defended Scottish freedom at the battle, a freedom which lasted until the year 1707. On the battlefield is a statue of Robert on horseback proudly looking out across the countryside.

The Church of Holy Rude is Stirling’s second oldest building after the castle and was made famous as the church in which James VI was crowned King of Scotland in 1567. The church is thought to have been founded in the year 1129 although nothing of its original structure remains.

Stirling Castle combines striking architecture with an imposing hilltop position and can be seen from miles around. The city’s main focus is this impressive fortification which has kept Stirling safe on many occasions in years gone by. Many monarchs and greats have visited and graced the castle, from William Wallace to Robert the Bruce and Queen Victoria to Mary Queen of Scots. Records of Stirling Castle date back to around the year 1110.

The landmark Wallace Monument is set in a prominent position on a hilltop on the fringe of the city overlooking the surrounding countryside. It commemorates Scotland’s national hero William Wallace who fought for Scottish independence during the 13th century. The monument was built in the 1860s and there are exhibitions located inside.
