Famous Scotsman Robert Burns was born in Alloway near Ayr, in a small cottage in the village. Today, there is a museum and park to commemorate the literary genius, born in the region in 1759. Several new additions were brought to the park in 2009 to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the poet’s birth, such as the Robert Burns Birthplace Museum and a general redevelopment of the park as a whole.

This impressive castle is set on the west coast of Scotland and is a particularly striking building which you can visit and explore. The grounds, protected by the National Trust, are open from April to November, and include restaurants, shops, a visitors’ centre and gardens. It is thought that this impressive castle dates back to the 1400s to a time when it was known as Coif Castle, though it has changed its name on several occasions since then.
