Bothwell Castle is distinctly different from Dumbarton Castle; the battle-hardened structure is set on a bend in the River Clyde and is a red colour. Work began on the castle in the second half of the 13th century but the work was never completed due to a succession of invasions and sieges. The castle is Scotland’s largest 13th century castle and some of its original features have survived.

Dumbarton Castle is located just to the south of Dumbarton at the base of a 73-metre-high volcanic rock. With the volcano behind, the castle looks out to the Clyde River in front and so takes up a unique and strategic position. There is less to this striking building than there once was and today visitors can climb the 557 steps to explore the White Tower Crag from which the views are impressive.
