Like the cathedral, the town’s castle stands in ruins but shows something of the town’s past and is one of St Andrews’ picturesque attractions. Parts of the castle can still be explored; there is a siege mine and a counter mine as well as a bottle dungeon. There is also a visitor centre and a shop. The castle is set on a piece of land which juts out into the sea and so views of the beach and North Sea are good.

St Andrews’ cathedral was constructed around the year 1160 but today lies in ruins from its position in the centre of the town. Amid the dramatic ruins is St Rule’s Tower which still stands firm and which boasts fantastic views when stood at the top. It was the cathedral and the supposed presence of St Andrew’s bones which brought many pilgrims to the town in the medieval period.

Formerly a private residence near the centre of the town, the St Andrews Museum opened in its current form in 1991. The museum gives visitors a glimpse into the history of the town, starting from its earlier periods and passing through the ages, up to the 20th century. The museum is set in Kinburn Park which is also home to tennis courts, putting greens and bowling greens.
