Stronghold of the Chiefs of MacLeod for more than 800 years, Dunvegan Castle is an imposing landmark on the island’s skyline. The 14th century keep, 15th century tower and a hall built in the 17th century have been continuously occupied by the chiefs of the clan MacLeod since at least 1270, longer than any other family castle in Scotland. Today, the castle is open to the public and artefacts such as the Fairy Flag of Dunvegan, Rory Mor’s drinking horn, and interesting memorabilia relating to Bonnie Prince Charlie are testament to the castle’s proud historic importance.
