The Up Helly Aa Festival is an annual winter celebration in the Shetlands. Up until the 19th century the festival incorporated fiery barrels of tar, but this practice was stopped for safety reasons. However firelit torches are still an integral part of the costumed proceedings, which ends with the setting sail of a flaming viking longship.
