Click for travel directions The Channings Hotel in Edinburgh offers a particularly friendly place in which to relax and brings together five Edwardian townhouses near the city centre. One of the townhouses was once home to Antarctic explorer Sir Ernest Shackleton and so the top floor suites are named after the man and his colleagues. There are also black and white paintings of the expedition in some of the rooms, providing a glimpse into the hotel’s heritage. The four-star Channings Hotel opened its doors as a hotel in 1990 but it was between the years 1904 and 1910 that Shackleton lived under the roof of number 14 while he was Secretary of the Royal Scottish Geographic Society.

The property is to be found to the north-west of the city centre, on the north side of the river in the Stockbridge part of the Scottish capital. It takes approximately 10 minutes to reach the West End from the Channings Edinburgh Hotel and here guests will find Edinburgh Castle, Princes Street and the main shopping area. If you are travelling to the area by train the city’s main station is around a mile-and-a-half from Channings, while if travelling by car there is chargeable parking on the road on which the hotel lies.

At the Channings Hotel Edinburgh there are 41 bedrooms, a figure which includes unique rooms, superior rooms, aptly named Shackleton rooms and a series of suites. Some of the rooms look out over the cobbled streets below, while others feature photographs, antique furnishings and an array of amenities. Channings Restaurant continues the relaxed and informal atmosphere of the hotel and is said to be one of the city’s top places to eat. The restaurant opens for breakfast, lunch and evening meals and fresh, seasonal and organic produce is used where possible. Further, there is a garden sundeck as well as a bar and so guests can dine alfresco or take on board some beverages during their visit. For meetings and events there are two facilities, namely the Kingsleigh and the Library and they can be put together to form a larger meeting room. This forms a space large enough for groups of up to 50 people in a reception style setting.
