The Ironworks at Bersham was once an internationally renowned foundry. The ironworks made cannons for the American War of Independence, and cylinders for the first steam engines during the Industrial Revolution. The ironworks closed in the early 19th century, but have now been re-opened as a heritage and visitor centre, including some surviving artefacts and a display showing the life of an 18th century foundryman.

Chirk Castle dates from the early 1300s and was built as one of King Edward I’s fortifications across North Wales. Bought by a noble family in the 16th century, Chirk Castle is now managed by the National Trust. The castle displays an impressive collection of artefacts from a distinct range of time periods, from medieval to modern. A particular highlight is the award-winning gardens and the 18th century parkland surrounding the castle.

The Clywedog Valley Trail is a marked pathway leading from Minera Lead Mines up to Kings Mill, taking in the scenery and the heritage of the area on the way. An information booklet is available from Nant Mill Heritage Centre, which is itself along part of the trail route, and describes the history behind the sights of the Clywedog Trail.

A beautiful example of a stately home, Erddig Hall is widely regarded as one of the finest National Trust properties in the UK. The house is particularly renowned for the former owners’ good relationships with the servants: consequently, in addition to the house’s distinguished original furnishings and beautiful preserved garden, Erddig contains a remarkable record of those who lived and worked at the house.

Llangollen Railway provides a scenic rail service that runs for almost 8 miles alongside the River Dee as far as Carrog, and there are plans to possibly extend the line. Available at weekends, and with additional services on weekdays during the summer, it offers a lovely scenic manner in which to explore Denbighshire.

Wrexham parish church is an outstanding example of late medieval architecture, and its tower is regarded as one of the seven wonders of Wales. The grounds of St Giles church are also the final resting place of Elihu Yale, namesake and benefactor of Yale University in Connecticut. During the summer, there are regular tours around the church and the famous tower.
