The force of the water at Aberdulais Falls once powered the copper and tin industries. Now, as well as being an inspiring area of natural beauty in its own right the waterfalls, are home to the largest hydroelectric water wheel in Europe. The site is managed by the National Trust.

A visit to Dan-Yr-Ogof, part of the National Showcaves Centre for Wales, is a truly fun-filled interactive family day out. Guests may take a tour of the showcaves, with their impressive stalactite formations, or visit the ‘Bone Cave’, where the remains of a Bronze Age family were found. Other on site attractions includes the life-size replicas in the Dinosaur Park, the Stone Circles (traditional burial places), the Shire Horse Centre and the 19th century farm.

Gnoll Estate is a historic garden turned visitor attraction near Neath in West Glamorgan. Margam Abbey ruins are the remains of a Cistercian Monastery. The nave of the Abbey is still standing and used as a local parish church. The adjacent Stones Museum is located in a former school house and houses an impressive collection of historic early-Christian memorial stones.

Margam Park offers an enjoyable family day out. At the centre sits the impressive Tudor Gothic-style Mansion and the estate’s famous Orangery. In the park’s epic grounds are the beautifully restored gardens, a scenic railway and several children’s areas, while deer and peacocks roam freely throughout much of the parkland. It holds regular events throughout the year.

Neath Abbey was once the largest Cistercian Abbey in Wales. Parts of the Abbey ruins remain remarkably complete given its varied history, having been attacked during the Welsh uprisings, dissolved by Henry VIII, then used as a copper smelting works. A wander around the remains is a remarkably atmospheric experience.

The seaside resort of Porthcawl lies less than a half hour drive from Port Talbot. The town grew out of local industry, but later became a popular coastal destination. It is also old-fashioned holiday resort. Today Porthcawl offers beaches, the traditional promenade and a funfair, Coney Beach, which is open during the summer months.
