York Castle Museum can be found in the centre of York, close to Clifford’s Tower and the Coppergate Shopping Centre. A castle was built in York by William the Conqueror in 1068 but today all that remains is Clifford's Tower, the keep from a later castle built by Henry III between 1245 and 1258. York Castle Museum is a unique collection of everyday life and extraordinary objects; with over 100,000 items on display it is famous for some of the finest collections of artefacts in the country. Explore the gloomy prison cell of infamous highwayman Dick Turpin, wander through the beautifully recreated Victorian streets and shops of old York and take in the atmosphere of over five centuries of fascinating social history.

York Minster is the largest Gothic Cathedral in Northern Europe and is one of the UK’s most popular visitor attractions. Half of all the surviving medieval stained glass in England can be found in York Minster. After a disastrous fire in 1984, the ceiling was completely rebuilt at a cost of over £2 million, and the Minster is constantly undergoing renovation to preserve this magnificent building for future generations. Visitors to Castle Howard can wander freely through the house although guided tours are available.
