Hidden away in the Eastern Pyrenees between Spain and France is the tiny but prosperous principality of Andorra. It is somewhat surprising the country has not been swallowed up into one of its bordering neighbours at some point in history, and in fact, it has always relied heavily on Spain and France, particularly in the military sphere. However, it is now one of Europe's oldest nations dating back to around 1278 when it first gained independence. Today, tourism is the largest part of Andorra’s economy as people flock there each year to experience the mountains, the cheap goods and the Mediterranean sunshine.

Despite a small population of just 72,000 Andorra welcomes in the region of nine million tourists each year many of whom are drawn by the attraction of duty free items. Another impressive feature and perhaps a sign of its prosperity is that Andorrans have the highest life expectancy in the world at 83 or 84 years.

Some of the most popular Andorran activities involve scaling the heights of ANdorrathe Pyrenees Mountains with their highest peak of Coma Pedrosa which reaches approximately 3,000 metres into the sky. The capital Andorra la Vella is a compact town, home to some 23,000 inhabitants and with lots packed in to the small space there is. It is the shopping hotspot for the area, heightened by the lack of tax. Around and about there are a number of villages with Romanesque style churches and houses.

The culture is distinctively Catalan, perhaps unsurprisingly due to its neighbouring of the Spanish community Catalonia. Therefore the main language spoken is Catalan, while of course Spanish and French are widely used. Much folklore and history stemming from the Catalan tradition has developed in the country over the years, while there are also dances such as the contrapas, the marratxa and the Sardana. There is a national holiday on September 8; a day devoted to Our Lady of Meritxell.
