Bedfordshire is one of England’s smallest counties in terms of land area, but what it lacks in size it more than makes up for with its attractive scenery and host of interesting attractions and days out. Bedfordshire is a link between the South East of England, the Midlands and East Anglia, sharing borders with the counties of Buckinghamshire, Hertfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Northamptonshire. Being relatively close to London and with good road and rail connections, many of the more southern parts of Bedfordshire are becoming dormitory towns for workers in the capital. Bedfordshire has always been well connected to the rest of the country, and there is remaining evidence of this in the form of several Roman roads that run through the county; the Great North Road (now mostly described by the route of the A1 connecting London and Edinburgh and Watling Street (now the A5) are the two most prominent examples. The county town of Bedfordshire is, logically, Bedford although the largest town in the county is Luton, which since 1997 has been a unitary authority.
Bedfordshire is a county of contrasts; parts of South Bedfordshire are quite built-up urban areas, while other parts of the county, particularly the north, are much more rural. Part of the Chiltern Hills area of outstanding natural beauty can be found in Bedfordshire; this delightful ridge of gentle rolling hills and chalk downland makes its way from Oxfordshire to Hertfordshire, and is a haven for wildlife as well as a magnet for walkers and ramblers. In addition to its scenic attractions, Bedfordshire also boasts some of the UK’s most popular tourist attractions and offers a great selection of family days out. Woburn Abbey is one of England’s most beautifully preserved stately homes and stands amidst glorious grounds and gardens; the nearby Woburn Safari Park is home to endangered species and some of nature’s most intriguing creatures. Bedfordshire is also home to the famous Whipsnade Zoo, one of the UK’s most well known wildlife parks. With its scenery and attractions, as well as hotels, restaurants and country inns, Bedfordshire is there to be enjoyed, not merely driven through en route to somewhere else.
