The Shuttleworth Collection in Bedfordshire celebrates over a century of flight with this fascinating collection of aeroplanes and memorabilia. Founded in 1928, the Shuttleworth Collection has eight hangars containing a workshop, a garage and coachroom, and over 40 aircraft – all of which are kept operational and fly at events throughout the year. There is also a collection of historic vehicles, motorcycles and pushbikes, as well as a café and shop.

Whipsnade Wild Animal Park is one of the South of England’s favourite zoos, and can be found near Dunstable in Bedfordshire. It is home to over 2500 animals, and comprises over 600 acres of enclosures and parkland. Species include lions, elephants and rhinos; there is also a Birds of the World display; and the Discovery Centre is home to a fascinating array of reptiles and amphibians. Whipsnade also has a choice of cafes, a gift shop and picnic areas.

Toddington Manor can be found in the heart of the Bedfordshire countryside. It comprises over 10 acres of beautiful landscaped gardens, woodlands and lakes, and also a farm for rare breeds of animal and a collection of vintage tractors. The gardens have largely been replanted over the last 30 years, and make a tranquil and colourful way of spending an hour or two at any time of year.

Bushmead Priory in the far north east of Bedfordshire is an interesting and rare example of a refectory from an Augustinian priory. It has been remarkably well preserved, and has a splendid timber roof, stained glass windows and a collection of 14th Century wall paintings. Bushmead Priory is protected by English Heritage, and is open to pre-booked visitors during the summer months.

Houghton House, near Ampthill in Bedfordshire, was built by Lady Pembroke in approximately 1617. It is believed to have been the inspiration for the 'House Beautiful' in John Bunyan's 'The Pilgrim's Progress'. Now sadly ruined, the remains are open to the public, and demonstrate what a magnificent home this three storey stately home must have been.

Despite being relatively unknown, Wrest Park Gardens in Bedfordshire are some of the most spectacular and beautiful in the UK. Dating back to the 18th Century and developed over the following 150 years, Wrest Park Gardens display a variety of styles. Wrest Park was the rather impressive home of the De Grey family; their unusual mausoleum with its monuments from the 13th to the 20th Century can be found amidst the grounds.
