This is not an area where you may expect branches of certain chain stores, but you can expect the unusual. The Scottish Borders region is famous for soft cashmere and fine tweed, which you may well find on a shopping spree in New York; in a small Borders shop, however, you will find more choice at considerably less cost. The area has an abundance of independent retail businesses offering not only high quality knitwear and tweed but also a great variety of crafts and textiles as well as traditional delicacies and local produce.

Local craftsmen and women produce fantastic creations in ceramic, glass, paint and wood and many sell from their studios where you may see work in progress. Others send their art to shops in local towns where you may browse at your leisure. Peebles, in particular, has a great range of unusual shops and was recently voted the 'Top Independent Retailing Town in Scotland' for its high quality range of individual shops.

As well trading in arts and craft, high streets throughout the region have a good range of perishables. Independent butchers offer their unique brands of haggis, for example, and bakers, such as Dalgetty and Sons in Galashiels, perpetuate the tradition of the Selkirk bannock (a fruit bun) and the clootie dumpling (fruit pudding in a cloth).

It is worth remembering that some local family-owned businesses close for half a day one day a week (either Tuesday - Hawick. Wednesday – Kelso, Galashiels and Peebles, or Thursday)
