Bournemouth, although revered as one of the UK’s most vibrant party towns, has seemingly run dry when it comes to good pubs. While the town centre boasts a plethora of formulaic chain pubs, traditional inns with real ale are rather more thin on the ground. The neighbouring town of Poole fares rather better, and venturing into the Dorset countryside unearths some real gems. Below are some of Bournemouth’s better pubs.

Goat and Tricycle

West Hill Road,
Bournemouth,
BH2 5PF
Tel: 01202 314220

Located on Bournemouth’s West Cliff, the unusually titled Goat and Tricycle is a real ale haven in a sea of lager. Run by Wadworth’s brewery, this pub keeps a good range of cask ales and offers a cosy, friendly ambience in which to enjoy them.

The Porterhouse
Poole Road,
Westbourne,
Bournemouth,
BH4 9BG
Tel: 01202 768586

The Porterhouse is another of Bournemouth’s few real ale pubs, and is a favourite with discerning drinkers. A frequent regional winner of the CAMRA pub of the year award, The Porterhouse keeps a good selection of excellent Ringwood ales as well as the odd real cider, and also serves bar meals.

The Moon in the Square
Exeter Road,
Bournemouth,
BH2 5AQ
Tel: 01202 652090

Enjoying a central location, The Moon in the Square is part of the JD Wetherspoon’s chain, and consequently offers the usual virtues of cask-conditioned ales and decent food at exceptionally good prices.

The Blue Boar

Market Close,
Poole,
BH15 1NE
Tel: 01202 682247

A jaunt along to Poole in search of a decent pub will unearth this little jewel. Dating from the 18 th Century, the Blue Boar is a genuine free house that keeps a splendid selection of cask ales. Nautical paraphernalia adorns the walls and there are frequent live music nights in the cellar bar.

The Brewhouse

High Street,
Poole,
BH15 1DA
Tel: 01202 685288

The Brewhouse can be found on Poole High Street, and it is a popular little pub, thanks in no small part to the well-kept cask ales and reasonable prices. The Brewhouse is a regular contender for the CAMRA regional pub of the year award.

Poole Arms
The Quay,
Poole,
BH15 1HJ
Tel: 01202 672309

The Poole Arms enjoys a pleasant location by the harbour and boasts a distinctive green frontage. The interior is a comfortable, wood-panelled affair in which a good selection of cask ales is served. Al fresco drinking is a welcome feature during the summer months.

Malt and Hops
Parkwood Road,
Bournemouth,
BH5 2BW
Tel: 01202 433274

The Malt and Hops is located in Southbourne and is a pleasant enough pub, with a friendly atmosphere. It is a particularly popular venue for watching live football, thanks to the array of big screens, as well as frequent live music nights.

The Commodore Hotel
Overcliff Drive,
Bournemouth,
BH6 3TD
Tel: 01202 423150

The Commodore can be found in Southbourne, in a pleasant seafront location. It is one of the few pubs in Bournemouth to hold a Cask Marque for its beer, and also offers food at a reasonable price.
