The densely forested state of Brandenburg is located in the north-east of Germany and is known for its ability to keep a well-preserved environment. Its capital is the city of Potsdam, seen by some as one of the country’ most beautiful cities, while other major towns and cities include the likes of Cottbus, Brandenburg-an-der-Havel (after which the state is named) and Frankfurt-an-der-Oder. Brandenburg is medium in size and is home to approximately 2.5 million inhabitants.

Brandenburg’s position in the east of the country means it is bordered by Poland to the east, while also surrounding are German states Mecklenberg-Vorpommern, Saxony Anhalt and Saxony. Meanwhile, Berlin is in a mini-state all of its own right in the centre of Brandenburg. In 1996 a referendum was held to decide whether the capital should be incorporated into the wider state, however, despite the Berliners welcoming the idea, it was the residents of Brandenburg who turned down the notion.

BrandenburgAs well as its numerous pine forests, the state is also known for its lakes and rivers. Parts of the borders are consolidated by the rivers Oder and Elbe, while running through Brandenburg is the river Havel, on which the town of Brandenburg lies. The region’s fierce nature protection policy focuses around 15 specifically protected areas. There is one national park called Lower Oder Valley, as well as three biosphere reserves and 11 nature parks. In addition, the Spreewald wetlands region provides another aspect to the diversity of the state.

Brandenburg is home to no fewer than 280 foreign companies and so proves an inevitable destination for many a business traveller attending meetings and conferences in its towns and cities. One such city is capital Potsdam which is also an ideal distance from Berlin for daytrips. It is often thought of as Germany’s Versailles due to its post-Second World War role in carving up Germany between the Allies. Potsdam is said to be one of the country’s most picturesque cities thanks, in part, to its interesting architecture and its fascinating history.
