SS Great Britain was the world’s first great ocean liner, designed by legendary engineer Isambard Kingdom Brunel to transport passengers in luxury to New York. SS Great Britain set new standards in engineering, reliability and speed; launched in 1843, she was the world’s first large iron hulled ship and the first to be driven by a screw propeller. Now standing in dry dock, SS Great Britain is a magnificent sight and a fascinating day out.

Bristol’s magnificent Cathedral stands proudly looking over the city. It was founded as the Abbey of St. Augustine in 1140, and became the Cathedral Church of the Holy and Undivided Trinity in 1542. Bristol Cathedral is one of the most prominent examples of a 'Hall Church' in the UK and is certainly one of the finest of its type in the world.

The iconic Clifton Suspension Bridge has spanned the Avon Gorge since it was finally completed in 1864. Designed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel, the bridge is a Grade I listed building; the foundation stone was laid in 1831, but the project was beset by financial difficulties and was abandoned in 1843. Its completion in 1864 came five years after the death of its great designer.
Guided tours start from the Clifton toll at 3.00pm every day between May – September.

Formerly a windmill until its conversion to an observatory in 1829, The Clifton Observatory is the UK’s only camera obscura open to the general public. Visitors can also explore the natural caves and enjoy breathtaking views of Brunel’s Clifton Suspension Bridge and the Avon Gorge.
