Buckingham today is a vibrant market town
characterised by a fine array of Georgian
buildings including the impressive Old Gaol
and Town Hall located either end of the
Market Square. The Old Gaol is home to an
information centre as well as a fascinating
museum reflecting the rich history of the
town and surrounding area. Home to Britain’s
first modern independent University, the
town also enjoys close links to the internationally
famous Silverstone Motor Racing Circuit
and the magnificent Stowe Landscape Gardens.
Beneath the gentle exterior of this unspoilt
town lies a fascinating history which helps
to explain why the name of Buckingham is
famous the world over.
Buckingham offers a fascinating variety
of shops with numerous independent small
traders. This is a cheerful, friendly alternative
to the normal chain stores that populate
most towns and the scramble that usually
accompanies town centre shopping.
Craft and antique shops sit side by side
with florists, jewellers and gift-shops
all nestled neatly in the attractive town
centre.
The recently refurbished Cornwall Place,
which is home to many different retail outlets,
is conveniently located next to plentiful
free parking at Cornwall Meadow.
A market town since the time of Mary Tudor,
weekly markets are now held on Tuesday and
Saturday with an additional antique market
taking place in the Old Cattle Market area
on Saturdays
