Cambridge is not only the traditional county town of Cambridgeshire, it also has a long tradition as a bustling market town – a tradition that is as engrained in Cambridge’s history as the University. Consequently, Cambridge has always been seen as the region’s commercial hub, and this is still the case today. Cambridge offers excellent shopping facilities for a city of its modest size, with a good blend of major High Street brands, chic boutiques and smaller specialist outlets. Central to the city’s shopping is the Grafton Shopping Centre – with more than 70 shops and car parking for 1150 vehicles, it is the region’s largest shopping complex. Cambridge’s historic market continues to flourish in the 21 st Century, with the General Market offering every imaginable item 6 days per week, and Farmers’ Markets and Arts and Crafts Fairs every Sunday. Cambridge also has more than its fair share of antiques shops and some rather excellent bookshops, and wandering the historic lanes you are bound to come across a little treasure trove or two selling something out of the ordinary.

Cambridge’s historic markets continue to thrive, and are a feature of the Market Square every day of the week. The General Markets run from Monday to Saturday, with stalls selling everything from fresh produce to bicycles; while on Sundays the Farmers’ Market and Arts and Crafts Market offer the perfect opportunity to while away an hour or two and pick up a bargain.
