Ely Cathedral - The Cathedral Church of the Holy and Undivided Trinity of Ely – is one of the UK’s most celebrated examples of Norman architecture, and towers above the tiny city of Ely in Cambridgeshire. Peterborough,
Cambridgeshire,

A place of worship has existed on the site of Peterborough Cathedral since the 7th Century AD, but the original abbey was destroyed by the Vikings. There are few remains of its Saxon replacement either, as the Normans constructed the current building on the site in 1118. It is one of the UK’s finest examples of Norman architecture, and it towers over the city of Peterborough below.

Peterborough,
Cambridgeshire,
PE8 6LR
Tel: 01780 784444

A group of enthusiasts re-opened a stretch of historic railway line, between Peterborough and Yarwell, in 1977 – the Nene Valley Railway was born again. Today it is one of the region’s main tourist attractions, and provides a fun day out for the whole family. Classic steam engines (both British and continental) haul the beautifully restored carriages through the low-lying countryside, and children will love meeting the famous Thomas the Tank Engine.

The museum opened in 1962, in an old grammar school where Cromwell had been a pupil over 350 years previously, and gives a fascinating insight into his life.
