Forever associated with affluence and eternal sunshine Cannes on France’s Azure coast exudes glamour from its seafront boulevards to the yachts lining its marinas. Most often linked to the high-profile Cannes Film Festival held annually in May at the Palais des Festivals, the city becomes overrun with photographers, celebrities and industry professionals and it is perhaps unsurprising that Cannes has become almost as synonymous with cinema and movie star glamour as Hollywood. With the sparkling Mediterranean Sea set against a backdrop of green hills and boulevards manicured to perfection Cannes is the ultimate luxury resort. The glittering main strip, Boulevard de la Croisette, epitomises the spirit of Cannes for many people and it is here that you will find palace hotels with private beaches, boutique accommodation where antiques and artworks are lovingly showcased and opulent Michelin recommended restaurants serving fresh seafood and Provencal cuisine. It is also here and in the surrounding streets where the boutiques of such renowned French fashion houses as Yves Saint-Laurent, Chanel and Hermès attract shopping enthusiasts from all over the world.
Cannes started life as a Roman outpost and then a densely populated agricultural fishing village until in the 1830s its stunning scenery attracted French and international aristocrats who built holiday homes in the region. This was the beginning of Cannes’ metamorphosis into a holiday resort characterised now by palm trees, white boulevards and sandy beaches. The history and natural beauty of Cannes is sometimes overshadowed by the glitter and glamour of yachts, expensive cars and bronzed bodies but the city has its own rich culture and a thriving arts scene typified by the many film, music and drama festivals held in the city every year. Galleries and exhibition spaces showcase some of the best in contemporary French visual arts and museums, such as the Musée de la Castre on Le Suquet, tell the story of the region through archaeological finds. Opposite the city the Lerins Islands tempt many tourists with excursions to admire their astonishing variety of flora and fauna and several key historic attractions. Cannes may be refined and polished, with perfect parks, unbelievably clean streets and luxurious shopping arcades but beneath its manicured veneer is an undeniable natural beauty that enchants every visitor.
