The Cotswold Wildlife Park and Gardens near Burford is home to some remarkable and unusual wildlife roaming happily in the Cotswold countryside. Lions, leopards, pandas, giant tortoises, zebras and camels are just a few examples in the menagerie of animals here, and there is also a reptile and insect tropical house. Children will love the Children’s Farmyard and Adventure Playground, while the narrow gauge railway appeals to young and old alike.

The Model Village is a beautiful replica of Bourton-on-the-Water, one of the Cotswolds’ most well-known villages. The fabulous one-ninth scale model was built by a team of local craftsmen in the 1930s and was unveiled for public viewing on the Coronation day of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth in 1937. The model village is complete and faithful in every detail, with the River Windrush, the bridges, the willow and chestnut trees, and even the Church of St Lawrence has the voices of a singing choir from inside!

The Cotswold Way is the perfect way of taking in the beautiful scenery of the Cotswolds – on foot. It was designated the status of a National Trail in 1998, and runs along the western part of the region from Stratford-upon-Avon, home of William Shakespeare to the historic city of Bath. There are few steep slopes and plenty of delightful stopping places, and the 101-mile route should present few problems for the moderately fit rambler.

Arlington Mill in the delightful Cotswold village of Bibury dates back to the 17th Century, and still houses a collection of working machinery, as well as photographs and documents that help to illustrate the practice of milling and the Victorian way of life for the 21 st Century visitor. As well as the museum, there is also a tearoom, a gift shop and a lovely herb garden.

The Cotswold Motoring Museum can be found in the quintessential Cotswold village of Bourton-on-the-Water. It is a fascinating journey through over 100 years of motoring, with some superb vehicles on display as well as memorabilia and the children’s favourite little car – Brum. The toy collection is a delightful and nostalgic collection of children’s playthings, with model cars, bicycles, pedal cars and Meccano to name just a few. Children of all ages will love it!

Gloucestershire has a fine selection of gardens, and the 10 individual gardens surrounding the 15th Century castle at Sudeley are some of the county’s best. Sudeley Castle is famous as the home of Katherine Parr, who was the sixth wife of Henry VIII. There are roses, perennials and herbs, a Tudor knot garden with a water feature centrepiece, a Heritage Seed Library garden, as well as formal pools, spring bulbs and a selection of fine trees. There is also a plant centre next door, for purchasing plants for your own garden, and a café serving light lunches and afternoon tea.

The Rollright Stones near Chipping Norton is one of the country’s most important Megalithic henges and is surrounded by mystical intrigue. Legend has it that the stones used to be a King and his army, who happened upon an old witch while they were marching through the Cotswolds. The witch challenged the King, saying "Seven long strides shalt thou take, and if Long Compton thou canst see then the King of England thou shalt be". The King then took seven strides and upon the seventh stride the Witch turned him and his men to stone.

Birdland Park and Gardens can be found in Bourton-on-the-Water, and is a recreated habitat for over 500 birds including flamingos, pelicans, penguins, cranes, storks, and waterfowl as well as more than 50 aviaries with parrots, falcons, pheasants, and toucans. There is also a 7-acre woodland garden to explore and is a great day out for all the family.

Cotswold Water Park

The Cotswold Water Park is a unique environment. Covering 40 square miles in the heart of the Cotswolds the park is home to over 140 lakes created by gravel extraction. The area was designated as a park in 1967 and today incorporates not just its famous lakes but acres of stunning countryside and 150km of paths and cycleways. As such the Water Park is incredibly popular with sports enthusiasts, providing the ideal environment for outdoor pursuits with opportunities for cycling, walking, climbing, water sports, horse riding, fishing and sailing.
