Ballymoon Castle

Ballymoon Castle situated is one of the earliest Anglo-Norman strongholds in Ireland. Despite being in a relatively poor state of preservation, it remains one of the most impressive castles in the country, with its granite walls over eight feet thick.

The 13th century Carlow Castle was once one of the foremost castles in the region. It has a long history, having changed hands many times and eventually being captured by Cromwell in 1650. Unfortunately, much of it was destroyed during the 18th century by a doctor who was attempting to transform it into a lunatic asylum.

 
 

Browne’s Hill Dolmen

The Browne’s Hill Dolmen is a portal tomb dating from around 3000 BC. The massive granite capstone weights over 100 tons and is believed to be the largest in Europe and is one of County Carlow’s premier tourist attractions.

Huntington Castle

Huntington Castle is a 17th century construction built on the site of an earlier defensive fortification. Inside it is filled with a number of dark, atmospheric rooms featuring collections of tapestries, suits of armour and family portraits. It is believed to be haunted by the forms of several monks from the monastery which once stood on the site and by the spectre of a soldier who once garrisoned the castle.
