Despite its relative small size, both physically and in terms of population, Cavan is a truly buzzing county, filled with vibrant towns and villages, a dynamic cultural scene and some of the most spectacular scenery found anywhere in Ireland. County Cavan is entirely landlocked, so does not boast rugged coastal vistas like many Irish counties. Instead its landscape is dissected by hundreds of rivers, streams and lakes, lending it a character of sedate beauty that countless visitors every year never fail to find enchanting. With 365 lakes, one for every day of the year, County Cavan is often referred to as the Lake County and is a popular destination for watersports of all descriptions, from angling to cruising and swimming. However, the gentle, meandering landscape gives way to the barren Cuilcagh Mountains in the north west of Cavan. It is here the mystical source of the River Shannon, known locally as the 'Shannon Pot', is found amidst some of the most spectacular scenery anywhere in Ireland. Being fairly sparsely populated, County Cavan enjoys a traditional air that is missing in more visited parts of Ireland. Indeed, people who do visit the county find it exudes a traditional, old world charm that is quite enchanting.
The county town of Cavan is worth visiting for several reasons. As the only Medieval town in Ireland founded by the Irish, it features an unusual road layout, with today’s streets following the road pattern established centuries ago. As a result, like the rest of the county it has a unique and intriguing atmosphere that makes it a big hit with visitors. But Cavan is just one small part of what makes the county one of the most memorable parts of Ireland. Its network of winding waterways, gorgeous landscapes and traditional culture gives visitors a vision of Ireland few ever get to see.
