County Donegal sits in one of the most naturally spectacular regions of Ireland, with a magnificent landscape of mountains, moors, unspoilt boglands and gorgeous sandy beaches. The county is dominated by the Hills of Donegal, consisting of the Derryveagh Mountains to the north and the Bluestack Mountains to the south, overlooked by the summit of Mount Errigal, which stand 751-metres high at the summit. This rugged landscape is tempered by County Donegal’s succession of natural loughs, ancient boglands and some of the world’s finest beaches. Indeed, County Donegal’s beautiful beaches are rapidly making the county a favourite destination for tourists, with more and more visitors flocking there every year. However, thanks to its relative innaccessibility, with only 20 miles of border with the rest of the Republic of Ireland, at present it remains considerably less commercialised than many other parts of Ireland. While this may represent a downside for mass tourism, it has made County Donegal a leading destination for outdoor pursuits, from angling to hiking and mountain climbing.
County Donegal also has a rich heritage, with a wealth of historical and archaeoligical sites scattered actoss the landscape. The area around Ballyshannon is of particular interest to visitors, with a collection of religious sites, ruined castles and Celtic raths. Its location on the periphery of Ireland has also meant that County Donegal has developed a uniquely distinct culture and tradition from the rest of the country, making it one of Ireland’s most fascinating regions to explore. The language spoken in Donegal is a variant of Irish spoken elsewhere, but is strongly influenced by Scottish Gaelic, many speakers of which settled in County Donegal from the 17 th century onwards. Furthermore, the county has a world renowned fiddle tradition, which visitors to virtually any pub in the county can experience. This is particularly evident in the major towns of Letterkenny and Bundoran, with their vibrant cosmopolitan atmosphere finishing off a trip to this most spectacular and beautiful county in traditional Irish style.
